Type Locality and Naming

The type section is located at the east cliff at entrance of the Danan Gully (E114°43′, N40°05′), about 1 km southeast of Dongyaozitou village, Beidaquan town, Yuxian County, Hebei Province (Tang, 1980). It was formally named by Tang and Ji (1983).


Lithology and Thickness

The Dongyaozitou Fm is characterized by a series of greyish-white gravels with yellowish-green, greyish-yellow, and yellowish-brown sandy clays. It contains abundant mammalian, sporopollen, ostracod, bivalve, gastropod, and fish fossils. Its thickness is about 37 m.

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

In the type section, the Dongyaozitou Fm disconformably contacts with the underlying Upper Pliocene Daodi Fm.

Upper contact

In the type section, the Dongyaozitou Fm is disconformably overlain by the Lower to Middle Pleistocene Nihewan Fm.

Regional extent

The formation is restrictedly distributed to both sides of the Huliu River in the Nihewan Basin, Hebei Province.

Mammals: Coelodonta antiquitatis, Gazella sinensis, ?Axis sp., Nyctereutes cf. N. sinensis, Proboscidipparion sinense, Paracamelus sp.. (Tang, 1980; Tang and Ji, 1983)
